Songs of Activism by Avery Hill

The Music and the Movements of Harry Belafonte and Cesar Chavez. Songs inspire us.  Songs rally us.  Songs help us work that muscle of empathy that reminds of our connections to each other.  Ultimately, they reflect what is most important to us.  In this class, we will learn songs that were central to the Civil Rights Movement, the United Farm Workers Movement, and other recent justice movements.

When: Thursdays, 7:30-8:30pm: September 12, 26, October 3, 17, 24, and 31.

*In addition to musical discussion, participants are encouraged to join two online discussions that will focus on two documentaries: Harry Belafonte: Sing Your Song and A Song for Cesar , giving us historical background for the music we are studying. Discussions take place via Zoom on Sundays, September 15 and October 6 at 4:00pm.

Where:   Southminster Presbyterian Church
12250 SW Denney Road
Beaverton, OR 97008

Ukulele Jams by Avery Hill

Description:
This mixed-level jam is best suited for ʻukulele players who are already comfortable playing in the Key of C and are looking to expand their musical repertoire. We play songs that pull from a variety of genres, songwriters, and musical traditions, especially those you won't hear at other ʻukulele jams. For example, we’ve got everything from folk favorites from The Carter Family to an ʻukulele adaption of “The Wind Cries Mary”, by Jimi Hendrix. We’ll play “Bring Me Little Water Sylvie”, by early 20th century songwriter Leadbelly, and then “Closer to Fine” by late 20th century rockers The Indigo Girls.

Songbooks provided. If youʻd like to download / print the Songbook ahead of time, join Avery's newsletter at: www.averyhill.studio/contact. Use the same link to contact Avery with any other questions or concerns.

Fee:We gratefully accept donations of any amount, but recommend $10 as a benchmark. Please plan to bring cash or check for the donation box, or you can pay ahead of time here
