On Sunday afternoons, the Hostel Café in Portland, Oregon provides a friendly setting for this TrailJams Irish traditional tune session. TrailJams is a music community focused on making acoustic music together outside for the enjoyment of the musicians and of people passing by. The cozy café makes a great place to keep the music going in the winter. In better weather, the tune playing moves out to the café’s courtyard. Guests of the Hostel Café and the adjoining Northwest Portland Hostel are likely to settle at one of the nearby tables to enjoy the music.

Uilleann piper Preston Howard Wilde leads an Irish piping session - it’s a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

The 2nd Sunday English Dance for Experienced Dancers is an opportunity to dance to the music of Fine Companions (and friends), suggested donation $10, dance shoes required, no street shoes permitted beyond the entrance.

The dances will be a balance of familiar dances and unfamiliar dances.

The callers will encourage dancers to incorporate style points such as quality of movement, timing, transitions and dancing with the music.

We ask that dancers be comfortable dancing standard English Dance figures including:
- Heys in various orientations
- Regular and Double figure eights
- Triple minor progressions
- Dancing with couples outside of your group of 4
- Straight and draw poussettes.

Mask Policy:
PCDC has authorized committees to make decisions about masking policies for their own events. All regular Contra and English dances will be mask-optional. Check the upcoming dances information to verify status of a dance.

COVID Policy:
PCDC no longer requires proof of vaccination, but we continue to encourage everyone to be vaccinated. While currently available COVID-19 vaccines no longer do much to prevent transmission, they continue to be effective for protecting oneself from more serious illness.

We believe great things happen when we play tunes together! People connect with each other and make friends, and we keep our music traditions alive by sharing tunes and passing them on. What’s more, playing tunes can make you feel happy, and if you do it often enough, you’ll notice that you are getting better at playing your instrument too!

It turns out that you don’t even have to be in the same place…great things still happen when we play music together, online from the comfort of your own home.

Herga at The Castle is a folk and acoustic music evening, with roots going back to 1963.

However, we have restarted online singarounds using Zoom, now on the second Monday of each month.

Note that this meeting runs independently of the live folk club, which runs in parallel at The Castle, Harrow-On-The-Hill.

The Everyone Welcome Community Choir is a non-audition singing class and choir rolled into one, where the number one reason for returning is FUN. Led by Anne Weiss, $165 for seven weeks or $30 drop-in. Register at the Artichoke Music website using the link provided.

Instead of "choral" music, we use songs from around the world: African, folk, gospel, Balkan, rounds, reggae, and more! We focus on pitch, breath, harmony, rhythm, and... did I mention fun? Any skill level, any age. Bring your family, bring your friends.

The Portland Jug Band Jam meets the second Monday of each month for
traditional, good-time jug band music. Bring a song to lead or pick one from our book. All abilities are welcome. Acoustic instruments only. Come to play or listen!

Come at 7pm for the zydeco lesson and stay for the dancing, Tuesday nights at Catfish Lou‘s.

Take advantage of the weekly lesson for beginners and then stay for the dance ‘til 9:30. Instructors rotate weekly and each brings their own curated playlist of classic and contemporary zydeco and Cajun music. Zydeco, two-step, waltz, blues, swing.

Tony Becker of San Jose, California and Mark Wallis of Gloucester, England host this Transatlantic session for all interested parties on Wednesdays at 8:00 PM UK time. For American visitors, please note we are now all on standard ‘winter‘ time, so that is 12:00 PM Pacific in the USA.

Open to all who play traditional Irish music and It has the obvious limitations of Zoom in that only one musician can play at a time. But we go round the ‘room’ and take it in turns - no pressure though and the baton can be passed if you just want to listen. We just play for a couple of hours.

On a good day we have a variety of instruments from pipes to Melodeon, banjo to fiddle and it can be a good way to pick up tunes. It is very friendly and we welcome everyone. The only criterion is we try to stick to Irish traditional.

Master button accordion player John Whelan hosts a free, live “Taking Time” slow session on Zoom. The session starts at 2:30 pm Pacific time, lasts for about one hour, with a 30 minute break, and starting the Taking Time Slow Session at 4 pm Pacific.

Players and listeners of all levels are very welcome to enjoy playing or hearing favorite tunes at a moderate tempo, along with the all-important warmth of connection that shared music brings into our lives, even — or rather, especially — now.

This is also a great opportunity for learning new tunes, as everybody but the session leader (John) will be muted while they play. Unlike an in-person session you can noodle along to your heart’s content, and nobody will ever know unless you tell them.

John sends out the Zoom link and tune list to his newsletter subscribers every week, usually on Tuesday evening (Pacific time). Please make sure to sign up for his email newsletter, on his website, using the link below. That is all you need to do — no separate sign-up process required!

Artichoke Community Music class led by Megan Cronin Tucker, $130 for six classes/$25 drop-in.

This class is for adults who are interested in learning the fun and joyful experience of playing ukulele in a supportive group setting. The ukulele is accessible to nearly everyone and is a great jumping off point for anyone who has never dabbled in the realm of playing a musical instrument. This class is also open to those who are already at a beginner level and want to expand their knowledge. Soprano, concert and tenor ukes are welcome.

With the return of good weather, the outdoor tune session resumes Thursday afternoons in the Butterfly Garden in Cook Park, Tigard, Oregon.

Let’s get together to play some tunes outside!

This is a weekly event in the good-weather months. The Butterfly Garden in Cook Park, Tigard, has wide open space where we can gather in shade, sunshine, or shelter.

Bring a chair and an instrument. The park is a great place to take a walk or have a picnic before or after the session. If you come with companions, there is plenty of room for them to roam among the trees and trails and by the river if they want a break from the tune playing.

Where we are gathering: as you enter the park via SW 92nd Ave, turn left at the open gate and head toward Shelter 4 (the park’s website has a map). We’ll gather on the lawn near Shelter 4, at the entrance to the Butterfly Garden. We’ll pick a shady spot if it’s a warm day, or grab a sunny spot if it’s a cool day. If it’s rainy we’ll get under the roof of Shelter 4.

This 6-week class is led by Avery Hill and will cover/review all the basics you need to know for early success in your ‘ukulele playing, $100 for six classes.

Blues for ?Ukulele: Basics & Beyond - This 6-week class led by Avery Hill is a mixed-level ukulele class for players of various learning styles and experience, $120 for six classes. Using popular and accessible songs, we’ll expand our repertoire of musical skills and technique in the process. Starting Thursday, May 2 at Southminster Presbyterian Church.

Avery Hill has been teaching music since 2013, and is a staple instructor of the Portland (OR) ‘ukulele community. Over the years, she has run her own studio of ?ukulele classes and workshops, and is a regular instructor at the Menucha Ukulele Band Camp. More recently, she has maintained a YouTube channel for ?ukulele tutorials and has begun teaching songwriting, including at the Songwriter Soireé Retreat. Whatever the classroom, Avery strives to educate everyone’s inner musician, to elevate their self-knowledge and confidence, and to enchant them with insight, presence, and a handful of good jokes. Kelly Brightwell & Woody Moran lead a song circle at The Artichoke every 3rd Sunday of the month. Bring your instrument, bring your songs (original or cover), bring your voice and let’s share some songs around the circle, suggested donation $5-$10 (doors open at 12:30 pm).

Americana artist Kelly Brightwell and folk-rocker Woody Moran serve up catchy harmonies and heartfelt messages with a sound reminiscent of The Civil Wars, Birds of Chicago, and UK band The Shires. The award-winning songwriters perform as a duo and with a full band in the Pacific Northwest region, playing house concerts, listening rooms and festival stages.

On Sunday afternoons, the Hostel Café in Portland, Oregon provides a friendly setting for this TrailJams Irish traditional tune session. TrailJams is a music community focused on making acoustic music together outside for the enjoyment of the musicians and of people passing by. The cozy café makes a great place to keep the music going in the winter. In better weather, the tune playing moves out to the café’s courtyard. Guests of the Hostel Café and the adjoining Northwest Portland Hostel are likely to settle at one of the nearby tables to enjoy the music.
