Joe Hickerson
Memorial Gathering

In-person & Online
Saturday, January 10, 2026
1:00 p.m., Pacific time

Joe Hickerson, a seminal figure in the folk music world, died on August 17, 2025. At Oberlin College, he was a member of a folk group, The Folk Smiths, which toured college campuses and youth camps leaving behind fans of folk music wherever they went. Joe was one of the formative voices of the folk revival of the 1950s and 60s when he introduced a number of its foundational songs including Kumbayah and Where Have All the Flowers Gone (with Pete Seeger). He was Head Librarian and Director of the Archive of Folk Song at the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress for 35 years. During the last 13 years he made Portland his home (to be close to his sweetie, Ruth Bolliger). He wrote a series of articles about the early days of the folk revival for Local Lore which you can find here, along with other information about Joe.

The memorial gathering for Joe will be hybrid:

•  In-person at the Lucky Labrador Beer Hall, 1945 NW Quimby St, Portland, OR 97209
•. Online on Zoom: Please register here first. As soon as you register, the software will send you a confirmation email about joining the event.

Participants will be invited to share a brief story about Joe or lead a song appropriate to the occasion. We will intersperse in person participants and online participants. At the in-person event,  each participant will be called up to a mic; on Zoom, participants will be invited to speak or sing according to when they arrive.

If you would like to contribute a written piece in his memory, to be posted on a special memorial page for Joe on the Portland FolkMusic Society website, send it to Casey Casebeer: diplocase@yahoo.com.

All are welcome. We hope to see you there.

Zoom Song Circle

Virtual Song Circle
Every Saturday Night

More Information

PFS Virtual Song Circle No. CCCIV

Every Saturday Night, a group of folks meets on Zoom for the Virtual Song Circle, or VSC. The virtual doors open at 6:00 PM Pacific Time for schmoozing and tuning, and singing starts at 6:30. There's a group of regulars, and frequent newbies drop in, and sometimes people who have dropped out drop back in. It doesn't make any difference: all people, all songs, are welcome. You can stay for five minutes or five hours. Very relaxed.

Some folks don't like to sing on Zoom, and we understand that. If that's you, you MIGHT want to try again. The technology has gotten better, and we've gotten better at moderating the events. Anyway, although we all miss the hugs, handshakes and harmony of in person events, we also appreciate the ease of getting together with people from all over the place. Give a try, or a second try...

If you know all you need to know about the VSCs, just click here to join.  Want to know more? There's tons more information at portlandfolkmusic.org/virtual.

BTW - we have a game we play of singing the song from the numbered ballads collected by Francis James Child whose number corresponds to the number of the VSC. This coming week at least one of us will sing the ballad called Young Ronald. Partial plot summary: Boy wants to marry girl but she says she is too young. However, they decide that IF he can slay a three headed giant, then he can have her hand in marriage. Come to the VSC to learn how it turns out!

If you need more, go to the Events menu above and pull down to Folk Calendar. When you go there, you can sort by performances, classes, virtual, radio - whatever you like - and you'll have all the events from now until... well, you'll find everything we know about. If it's not listed here, it's probably not happening.
